Description
The UY Series Worm Gear Reducer is the AGMA inch-standard counterpart to the metric IEC W-series: designed from the ground up to NEMA motor dimensions, inch shaft tolerances, and inch keying conventions. Where the W-series specifies a 50 mm bore with a 14×9 key at size 50, the UY specifies a 0.625″ output shaft with 3/16″×3/32″ keyway at size 154 — native to the American and Australian industrial standards that govern NEMA motor frames, agricultural PTO drive trains, and the replacement market for legacy US-origin machinery throughout Australia. Twelve sizes from UY-133 through UY-600 (centre distance 1.333″–6.000″), ratios 5:1 through 60:1, with solid shaft output, through-shaft input, and a horizontal mounting base for surface-mount installation without a separate motor base. Self-locking at ratios ≥30:1 without a separate brake. Input shaft in imperial diameters from 0.500″ at size 133 through 1.500″ at size 600; output shaft from 0.625″ to 2.250″.

UY Advantages — AGMA Inch-Standard Worm Gear Drive for NEMA-Equipped Machinery
Native Inch Dimensions — Zero Conversion Errors (worm gearbox manufacturer)
The UY is specified entirely in inches: shaft diameters, keyways, bore tolerances, and mounting bolt circles all to AGMA/ANSI conventions. For Australian facilities where NEMA motor frames and inch-standard legacy machinery co-exist, the UY eliminates the metric-to-imperial conversion step that introduces shaft-to-coupling clearance errors and keyway mismatch risk in replacement installations.
Integral Horizontal Base — No Separate Motor Base Required
The UY housing integrates a horizontal mounting base with ANSI bolt hole pattern — mounts directly to any flat mounting surface. No separate fabricated base, no base rails, no height alignment shims between base and housing. For replacement installations in existing machine bays where the original base was integral to the old unit, the UY matches this configuration precisely without additional fabrication.
12-Size Range — Output Shafts 0.625″ through 2.250″
UY sizes 133 through 600 cover output shaft diameters from 5/8″ at the small end through 2-1/4″ at the large end — spanning the full range from light-duty agricultural and packaging machinery at UY-133 through heavy industrial bulk handling drives at UY-600. All inch-standard shaft and keyway dimensions match directly to AGMA-standard couplings and driven shaft bores without adaptation.
Self-Locking at Ratios ≥30:1 — No Separate Brake Needed
UY at 30:1, 40:1, 50:1, and 60:1 is self-locking — the output shaft holds stationary against back-driving load force on power-off without a motor brake. For Australian slow-speed conveyor, gate drive, and positioning applications where a separate brake adds cost, weight, and electrical complexity, the UY’s inherent self-locking eliminates this component at ratios 30:1 and above.
Through-Shaft Input — PTO or Motor Either Side
Through-shaft input provides motor coupling access from either UY housing face in inch-standard dimensions — 1/2″ at UY-133 through 1-1/2″ at UY-600, matching standard NEMA motor shaft diameters and AGMA jaw coupling bores directly without metric-to-imperial adaptor sleeves. PTO shaft connection from either stub via standard agricultural yoke adaptors.
Drop-In Replacement for US-Origin AGMA Worm Reducers
The UY’s AGMA-standard mounting footprint and shaft dimensions make it a direct drop-in replacement for US-origin worm gear reducers in Australian machinery with American legacy drivetrains. The integral base bolt pattern, input shaft diameter, output shaft diameter, and keyway dimensions match AGMA standards — replacement requires no shaft machining, no base modification, and no coupling adaptor in the vast majority of applications.
Applications — UY Series in Australian NEMA-Standard and Legacy US-Origin Machinery
- ⛓ US-Origin Conveyor and Material Handling Replacement (right angle worm gearbox)UY-262 through UY-450 at 20:1-50:1 for Australian mining and bulk handling facilities where the original US-manufactured worm gear reducer has worn out and the machine drivetrain uses NEMA motors and AGMA-standard couplings. The UY replaces the failed unit with identical shaft dimensions and base bolt pattern — no drivetrain rework, no coupling adaptor, no base fabrication. Critical for minimising conveyor downtime in Australian mining operations where replacement parts for obsolete US-origin units are unavailable locally.
- 🍏 Agricultural Implement Drives — NEMA Motor or PTO InputUY-133 through UY-300 at 10:1-40:1 for Australian agricultural implement drives where US-standard equipment operates with NEMA motors or tractor PTO shafts in inch dimensions. The UY through-shaft accommodates standard PTO yoke adaptors in AGMA inch dimensions directly. For PTO shaft and slip clutch selection in AGMA inch-standard applications, refer to agricultural PTO shaft resources. - 🔩 Packaging and Food Processing — Inch-Standard Light to Medium DutyUY-133 through UY-237 at 5:1-20:1 for Australian packaging machinery and food processing lines originally designed to NEMA/AGMA standards, where the output shaft drives an inch-standard coupling hub or sprocket without requiring a metric adaptor. Self-locking at 30:1 and above removes the motor brake from the specification for indexed positioning applications in packaging line drives.
- 🏭 OEM Australian Equipment with NEMA Motor SpecificationsUY-154 through UY-375 at 10:1-40:1 for OEM Australian machinery manufacturers sourcing NEMA-frame motors and specifying AGMA-standard gearboxes to enable North American export compliance. UY’s full inch-standard specification — shaft, keyway, base bolt circle, and housing geometry — satisfies NEMA/AGMA dimensional standards natively without conversion or non-standard components in the drivetrain.
- 🌎 Remote Australian Site Service — Stock Part InterchangeabilityUY-206 through UY-375 at 20:1-60:1 for remote Australian mining, agricultural, and water treatment sites where reduced-parts-inventory stocking strategies require interchangeability between site gearboxes. The UY’s AGMA standard dimensions mean a replacement unit from a different supplier with the same UY size number is dimensionally interchangeable — reducing the spare parts holding required at remote sites compared to proprietary-dimension alternatives.
Drive Accessories and Component Selection
AGMA Jaw Coupling — Inch-Standard Hub Bore
AGMA-standard curved-jaw coupling with inch bore matching the UY input shaft U dimension (0.500″-1.500″ depending on size). Select a coupling rated for the full motor torque with service factor. Seal the inactive input stub with the blanking cap; replace the lip seal at each 2,500-hour oil change interval.
NEMA Motor — Frame-to-Size Matching Table
NEMA frame selection by motor HP and speed. For UY-133/-154: NEMA 56 frame (shaft 5/8″). For UY-175/-206: NEMA 56 or 143T (shaft 7/8″). For UY-237/-262: NEMA 145T-182T. For UY-300 and above: NEMA 182T and above. Confirm motor shaft diameter matches UY input U dimension before ordering — NEMA shaft diameters are standardised by frame but vary between NEMA 56 and T-frame series.
Output Shaft Hub and Coupling — Inch Bore Required
The UY solid output shaft S (5/8″-2-1/4″) couples to the driven equipment via an AGMA-standard coupling hub or sprocket with matching inch bore. Confirm hub bore to shaft diameter clearance fit to ANSI B4.1 — RC2 or RC3 for light-duty; H7/h6 inch equivalent for medium and high duty. Keyway must match the UY output key W×Y dimension.
Gear Oil — AGMA 8 EP (ISO VG 680 Equivalent)
AGMA 8 EP compounded gear oil (equivalent ISO VG 680) is the standard specification for UY worm reducers. For continuous duty at 40°C+ Australian ambient at ratios ≥30:1, PAO synthetic AGMA 8 EP extends thermal rating and service interval. Verify the oil level in the horizontal base mounting orientation at commissioning; level may differ from factory specification if UY is mounted at non-standard orientation.
Agricultural PTO Adaptor — Inch-Standard Yoke
Standard ASAE/AGMA yoke adaptor fits UY input shaft U dimension directly — no metric-to-inch conversion sleeve required. Fit a friction slip clutch rated at 1.5x UY rated input torque for PTO-connected applications to protect the worm mesh from tractor PTO engagement surge torques.
Thermal Rating — Australian Ambient Correction
AGMA thermal ratings are referenced at 20°C (68°F) ambient. Australian summer ambient commonly reaches 38-45°C — apply a thermal de-rating factor of 0.75-0.85 for outdoor installations. At ratios ≥40:1 in continuous duty above 38°C, always verify thermal rating before finalising UY size — the thermal limit frequently governs before the mechanical torque limit in these conditions.

Maintenance Schedule — UY Series
| Interval | Task | UY Note |
|---|---|---|
| 500 hr | Flush gear oil; all fastener torque check; blanking cap seal inspect | Inspect integral base mounting bolts to the machine surface — base flex under load can loosen base anchor bolts, particularly on vibrating conveyors; re-torque to specification before continuing |
| 2,500 hr | Full oil change; all seals; base bolt re-torque; coupling element check | Inspect output shaft keyway for brinelling at the coupling hub contact zone — UY solid shaft keyways are the primary failure location for oversized shock loads in Australian mining and bulk handling applications |
| 5,000 hr | Full inspection; oil analysis; bearing play; input and output shaft runout | Measure input and output shaft runout with a dial indicator — Australian dust and vibration environments accelerate bearing wear in integral-base units; runout above 0.003″ TIR requires bearing replacement before continuing service |
